HMOs can be better policies. However, there are two things that should be considered before making a final decision.

An HMO will typically only cover emergency care if you are out of network. This probably works out well for most of us who can manage to get our routine care done at home and not when we are on vacation.

However, if you have a vacation home that you stay in for longer periods of time or are a “snow bird” you may have a problem when you need routine care.

The other issue to consider is the fact that some HMO plans include extra benefits like maternity care that you may not need. This can drive up the price.

Private medical insurance can be pretty complicated. However, it is important that consumers understand what they are buying.

Many times they will focus on the price and on the co-pays and ignore the hospital deductible, the out of pocket maximums and the lifetime limit.

I want my insurance to cover the big things, a plan with a low calendar year maximum covers the stuff that I could cover without insurance.

Hi,
I agree that you can get an excellent rate if you do your homework weighing all the options. I was self employed and responded to an Association Plan from Mega Life and Health. sounded good but I could have done much better by going directly to an insurance provider in the end. I encourage everyone to look for the best quotes through online brokers but also be very careful what you select.

There is a new company called Precedent that is getting ready to launch in Texas and will offer low cost individual health plans for young, reasonably healthy people. You buy into a plan at a super low cost with fixed benefits that will cover the typical activities of a healthy person. A healthy male 25-years-old (and under) would pay under $100 a month for basic coverage. Then, if something catastrophic happens, you have the option to get additional levels of coverage, even AFTER the event.
